Choosing a Native American Style Flute

by Terry Mack, accomplished flute player and owner of Peaceful Spirit Flutes
A simple guide to ranges, tones and comfort for beginners
I have created a table of the range of sounds available in Native American Style Flutes.

Please note that most flutes are created in the minor key signature but can play a range of 15 to 17 notes. There are many different scales that the flutes can play in, including pentatonic minor, chromatic, diatonic and others.  The NAF is mostly commonly known for the pentatonic minor scale.

Flutes range in length, higher range keys being shorter, with thinner bores and holes closer to together. The longer the flute, the thicker the bore becomes, the lower the sounds become. The spacing between the finger holes increases which means more stretching for your fingers
