THE CALL OF THE FLUTE by Terry Mack
The haunting, soothing sound reaches out to people. Whether I am playing on the beach or at a market or event, the sounds of the flute invite people to stop for a moment and just listen. It is like magic. I have watched people rushing by, completely stop when they hear the sound of the flute and come over to talk to us about them. I have witnessed, children stop crying when they hear the sounds of the flute and smiles spread across faces as people are drawn towards the sounds. I have seen sparks ignite in people as they tentatively meet a flute and coax those first timid sounds from it. I have heard a longing in the voices of people wishing they could play an instrument but not quite ready yet to embrace the possibility of making their own music.
Flutes call people.
Native American Flute music had become a favorite of mine since the first time I had heard it in 1996. Listening to them provided me any hours of peace, and solace. In 2005, I began to feel a call to play the flutes and asked my husband for a Native American Flute for Christmas. He found one and brought it into the house, hiding it away to surprise me with on Christmas morning.
The first night the flute was safely in the house, he dreamt of the flute.
It was calling to him.
This was quite a surprise to him ( it was no surprise to me) It reawakened a dream of his that had been tucked away in a little corner of his heart of sitting by the ocean playing a flute. He found himself playing this first flute when I was away from home, discovering how the flute makes sound and how it teaches us to bring out our own sound. His gift to me, became an even greater gift to himself. We now regularly play by the ocean and other magnificent natural settings. The flutes make it easy, if you just listen.
Flutes call people.
In a recent fair held in Nanaimo, I was playing the flutes at my table. A young man walked by, stopped and said to me " I can’t believe you are here." He looked in amazement at the flutes and then told me that the night before he had a dream in which someone handed him a flute.
I am not sure how they do it, but flutes call people.
Perhaps there is a reawakening in our spirits of the desire to create something that comes from deep inside of us. Since I have embarked on selling the flutes and bringing the joy of creating your own music to people, I have witnessed the subtle influence of the music reaching into the souls of people who stop by. There is no doubt in my mind that Native American flutes offer a gift of healing and communicating. There is no doubt in my mind that the flutes are a gift of the creator. Perhaps it is the creator who is calling to us through the flutes.
