Woodsounds Flute 2016 Video Competition

Brent Haines of Woodsounds Flutes has provided a nice platform for Flute players of all ages and abilities to create and showcase videos using his beautifully crafted Native American Style Flutes. I got brave and entered the competition with a simple video of my song Breath With The Trees. There are some wonderful entries from a very creative community of flute enthusiasts.

Comparing 2 flutes

10/17/2010

I have just recently acquired a wooden flute made by Chris Ti Cooms in the key of D that is more like a penny whistle. On the bottome two notes I can play 3 octaves. This is really interesting. The flute has a sound more similar to the rim blown flutes and is quite mysterious and mystical. It is probably more like an Irish penny whistle but the wood makes it soudn wonderful

I also have a Stephen De Ruby shakusazi low C flute that has amazing sound, very similar to the Chris Ti Cooms flute however it does not play the otaher octaves. It was really fun to spend time playing both of these flutes back to back and trying the same song to see how the nuances could work from these two great makers. The added octave features of the Cooms flute are still a bit of a challenge and will require some ( lots and lots of practice) . It is really fun to have a bit more of a range to noodle around with.

I am currently loving both of these flutes.

Feel free to share some thoughts about flutes that you are experimenting with. I would love to learn more about what other flute players are doing.

Vashon Island Flute Gathering

VASHON ISLAND FLUTE GATHERING
Every year in eary October, 30 or so people gather together to learn, share, encourage, support and just have a great deal of fun in a community of like minded people who love the Native American Style Flute.

I learn more and mrore each time I go to this event.

It is always an amazing time. The instructors were absolutely outstanding, Cornell Kinderknecht, Pam Mortenson and Anthony Nativdad. They bring a true committment to helping people learn and grow as players of the flute.

This years event was the best of the ones that I have attended ( my fourth time).

Wayne McClesky, the driving force behind this event, could not attend this year for personal reasons. He was very much missed and everyone held space so that the circumstances in Wayne' s turn out to be the very best they can be.

Thank you to everyone who makes this gathering happen, to the participants who create a safe and energetic space for the great week end

I had the great opportunity to perform twice on the New Breathe stage this year and It is really a fun time to play for people who love these flutes as much as I do. I could not stay for the award ceremony however to my delight and surprize , I opened an email when I arrived home informing me that I had been chosen as the best performer on the New Breathe Stage for Flute Quest 2010. What a thrill and an honor and I thank everyone who voted for me.

The flute quest people truly do a great job of organizing this event. Thanks for making it happen so well.

The winner of the best booth was Dennis Lombard of Mountain Flutes. I would love to have been their for the award ceremony to see the look on Dennis's face when the announcement was made.  Congratulations Dennis --- I am really happy for you.

Here I am after a whirlwind afternoon at flute quest. I have had a chance to check in with the flute makers, bid on silent auction items, drool and lust over some of the wonderful flutes and kick back and listen to some of the great performances from the new breath stage,

Attending flute festivals is like flute heaven for me. I enjoy meeting more flute enthusiasts and hanging out with some of the great people I have met over the years with my flute playing.

Satruday will be another fun day, I will be playing on the new breath stage and I am very excited about that. Flute festivals are fun.

Tomorrow I will take in the Mary Youngblood concert, but who my friends Joe Young and Ken Kholman are opening for her and I am very excited to see them.
stay tune for updates on my flutequest adventures 2010.

BC Renfest adventures this weekend

Awhile back Peaceful Spirit Flutes was invited to be a vendor at the BC Renaissance Festival in Langley July 16, 17 and 18th. We decided we were up for the challenge. I am sure a bunch of knights, jousters, peasants and pirates could use a good dose of
peaceful flutes. It is going to be a great adventure I am certain.
